ABOUT US

The mission of Dandelion House is to develop and provide programs including socialization, vocational training, contracted work, and job opportunities in a community setting for people with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities. Dandelion House is not a residential facility.

Dandelion House seeks to promote the dignity and self-worth of people with disabilities of all ages, while increasing their community presence and enlightening/educating the general public. Dandelion House serves as a transition site to assist individuals with disabilities in moving into dignified, paid employment in the community with real-world job experience under their belt. Employment obtained through Dandelion House is meant to be a training opportunity, allowing employees to add work experience to their resumes and to increase the likelihood of securing additional long-term employment.

We are no longer operating out of our storefront space. In that space, we were able to provide workshops for members of the community of ALL abilities. Workshops included vocational skills & employ-ability training, self advocacy sessions, music lessons, art classes, fitness classes, massage therapy and support group meetings (for individuals and family members of people with disabilities). Proceeds of all workshops went toward the opening of a fully operational Dandelion House Cafe. Workshops may still be offered at various locations-follow us on facebook for updates!

Our latest project has been to team up with local businesses to develop a work training program. This program provides on-the-job training & employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities interested in a career in the food & beverage industry. A new restaurant in downtown Jacksonville, folkfood, is currently partnered with us. Visit us at 219 Hogan St!

Eventually, we hope to partner with multiple business in the Jacksonville area in order to provide work experiences (with a focus on the service industry, as that is a current area of underrepresentation for our population with unique abilities in Jacksonville).

With time restrictions (employment at Dandelion House is intended for employment experience & training, not long term employment--maximum employment is two years), individuals with disabilities have the option to work Community Based Instruction shifts (usually as a part of a public school program), volunteer shifts (as little as one hour a day up to full time), or seek paid employment as a part of the Dandelion team.
